Herong Bai is a pianist from Ningxia, northwestern China, who began studying piano at the age of four and currently studies with Cliburn Artist Fei-Fei Dong. Beginning in 2014, much of her regular instruction took place remotely through WeChat video calls, supplemented by travel with her mother to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Dalian, and other cities for in-person lessons during school holidays and occasional weekends. Her artistic development has also included studies and masterclasses with Alexander Kobrin, Boris Berman, Robert Shannon, Jihye Chang, Alvin Chow, Haewon Song, Marina Lomazov, Ernest Barretta, Angela Cheng, and Leslie Howard, among others.
Herong has performed Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor with the Ningxia Symphony Orchestra as the only high school student soloist at its 2026 New Year Concert. Her international competition distinctions include Second Prize at the IPPA Conero International Piano Competition Global Finals and Silver Award at the Hudson International Music Competition.
In summer 2026, Herong attended the Brevard Music Center Piano Institute with merit scholarship and work-study support totaling $4,400. She was selected as one of ten pianists for the Etudes Project, becoming its only high school participant, and advanced to the semifinals of the Jan and Beattie Wood Concerto Competition. She performed at Parker Concert Hall and participated in Brevard's 90th-anniversary season finale featuring Yo-Yo Ma and conductor Giancarlo Guerrero. She also attended the 2025 Oberlin Piano Festival and was invited again in 2026, performed at Thalian Hall during the Vivace International Music Festival, and received a full-tuition scholarship to the 2026 New Orleans Piano Institute.
Alongside her musical pursuits, Herong studies mathematics and macroeconomics. She qualified for the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad with an index of 265.5, scored 12/15 on the AIME, and earned an Individual Gold Award in the National Economics Challenge. Her academic interests also extend to mathematical research, aviation data analysis, and the relationship between musical structure and mathematics.
Beyond the concert stage, Herong has independently pursued community music education in Ningxia, particularly for children whose families cannot afford private lessons. As a volunteer piano instructor working with the Ningxia Library and Tongxinyuan Community, she provides free music education to children from migrant-worker families, including children with autism. With limited instruments available, she has developed group-teaching methods that allow students to learn rhythm, notation, and musical coordination while sharing a single piano. In 2026, she also arranged 44 concert tickets for her students and their families to experience a live symphony performance of Grieg's Piano Concerto.
Her community outreach has also extended beyond regular lessons. In November 2025, she independently coordinated an interdisciplinary music, aviation, and STEM outreach event in partnership with the Ningxia Air Traffic Management Bureau, bringing together more than 100 students from local schools for classical-music appreciation, aviation education, and flight-simulator experiences. She has also helped organize free cultural programs at the Ningxia Library, including a December 2025 event combining piano performance with classical Chinese poetry, and contributed to a spring 2026 interdisciplinary educational program reaching more than 800 primary-school students across 14 classes. She has additionally served as a youth volunteer representative at International Volunteer Day activities.
Herong also serves as Regional Director for Northwest China of the Back to BACH Project, establishing its Yinchuan chapter and bringing together a network of 52 members. To expand the chapter's artistic resources, she recruited Germany-based pianist and collaborative artist Yizhuo Meng to provide remote musical mentorship and invited Leo Wang (Lu Wang), a piano soloist with the Ningxia Performing Arts Group Symphony Orchestra, to participate as a guest artist.
